Inside the World of Marci and Lori Hirshleifer: Fashion, Family, and Their Beauty Secrets

For sisters Marci and Lori Hirshleifer, style isn’t just a passion—it’s practically encoded in their DNA. As fifth-generation stewards of Hirshleifers, the storied Long Island destination once dubbed “the last great department store,” the two have been immersed in fashion since childhood. Their great-grandfather Jacob Hirshleifer opened the family’s first shop as a Brooklyn furrier back in 1910. Over a century later, the store has blossomed into a luxury retail landmark where you’ll often find Lori, part-owner and head buyer (blonde, sharp eye for detail), and Marci, global shopping director (brunette, known for her encyclopedic fashion memory), holding court on the sales floor.

And if you can’t make it to Long Island, there’s always their Instagram and TikTok feeds—equal parts style diary, new-in previews, and handbag appreciation posts. But as much as their closets get attention, their bathroom shelves tell a story too. We sat down with Marci at home—and caught Lori between appointments—to talk skincare, makeup, hair, and all the rituals that keep them feeling polished from head to toe.

Growing Up Hirshleifer

Lori always knew the family business was her destiny. “Honestly, I didn’t even want to go to college,” she admits with a laugh. “But my dad said, go—this will be your last four years of fun before you start working forever. And he was right. I grew up at the dinner table where the only topic was the store. That energy was magnetic.”

Marci’s path was a little less direct. “I knew I’d end up here too,” she says, “but I wanted to learn from the outside first.” Stints at Intermix, Searle, and Henri Bendel gave her perspective, but wholesale wasn’t for her. “I love working face-to-face with clients, not behind the curtain. That’s one thing that makes Hirshleifers special—you’ll always see us in the store.”

Their buying philosophy is simple: If they wouldn’t wear it, it doesn’t go on the rack. That same philosophy trickles down into their approach to beauty: practical, edited, but with plenty of luxury sprinkled in.

Skincare Staples

Marci leans functional: “My skin can break out easily, so nothing too heavy. And undereye puffiness is my eternal battle.” Her arsenal includes Augustinus Bader eye patches, the TheraFace Depuffing Wand, and Angela Caglia’s Daily Botanical Oil, layered over a rotation of cleansers and moisturizers from Eighth Day and Dr. Loretta. At night, she reaches for Dr. Sturm’s Night Serum and the now-iconic Augustinus Bader Rich Cream.

Lori, meanwhile, craves hydration. “As I’ve gotten older, moisture is everything. I start my mornings with Dr. Loretta’s Intense Replenishing Serum, followed by Dr. Sturm’s hyaluronic acid and her Face Cream Rich. Sunscreen is a work in progress—I know, I know—but when I do wear it, I like Eighth Day’s SPF 30 or Chanel’s UV Essentiel SPF 50.” At night, she swaps in Susanne Kaufmann’s cleanser and the Eighth Day Regenerative Serum.

Botox? They’re not shy. Both admit to light touches on the forehead and around the eyes. “I didn’t start until my forties,” Lori shrugs. “It’s not about freezing—it’s about looking rested.”

Makeup Mood

Marci is a concealer devotee. “Dark circles are my nemesis. I layer U Beauty’s Super Tinted Hydrator with Koh Gen Do concealer, and sometimes foundation if I need it. If I’m filming for Instagram, I keep it light so it doesn’t transfer on clothes.” She swears by Fara Homidi’s Essential Compacts, Victoria Beckham’s Bitten Lip Tint in Cherie, and a rotation of Westman Atelier products.

Lori’s makeup bag is stripped down by comparison. “I’m not a big makeup person—I don’t have the patience. But I love U Beauty’s Tinted Hydrator. It’s seamless, no streaks, and foolproof. I add Chanel’s bronzing cream and their eye makeup remover at night. For lips, I’m usually wearing a Victoria Beckham Posh Lipstick in Pose, layered with the Bitten Lip Tint.”

Hair Care Rituals

Both sisters swear by Crown Affair. “The scent is addictive, and the bottles are gorgeous,” Lori says. She washes three times a week with their hydrating shampoo and conditioner, adds leave-in for softness, and reserves oil for blow-dry days. Marci uses the same products but washes every other day. “I wish I could stretch longer, but my hair feels greasy fast. My favorite brush is the petite vented one from Yves Durif—it’s like a scalp massage.”

Color is another difference. Lori goes every three weeks to cover grays. “I’m not ready to let it go fully gray. Not for me!” Marci, on the other hand, has stuck to glosses and glazes, easing into the world of color slowly.

Nails & Fragrance

Lori is a gel regular: “Every 10 days. Gel might weaken nails, but mine were already brittle—so why not?” On toes, it’s always Chanel polish, with browns in fall and neutrals in summer.

Marci alternates between clean French manicures and bold red polish at her local spot, Barberry.

When it comes to scent, their preferences diverge: Marci is drawn to musk (her staples include Le Labo Noir 29 and Musc 25), while Lori loves fresh, atmospheric notes. “I burn Byredo’s Bibliothèque candle all the time—it smells like an old library. For perfume, I’m still mourning a discontinued love, IUNX No. 09 L’Eau Blanche, which I used to stock up on in Paris.”

The Family Legacy, Modernized

In many ways, the Hirshleifer sisters embody their store: rooted in history, but constantly evolving. Their beauty routines echo that philosophy, mixing heritage luxury brands with buzzy newcomers, practicality with indulgence. And just like in fashion, their guiding rule remains the same: If it doesn’t feel authentic, it doesn’t make the cut.
